Shot Placement on Deer – Where Should the Bullet Hit?
Good shot placement is one of the most important aspects of rifle hunting. Caliber, ammunition, and optics are naturally important, but even the best hunting bullet cannot compensate for a poorly placed shot.
The goal is simple: the bullet must hit vital organs and lead to a quick and humane kill. In practice, however, it's not always that simple. The heart is located low in the chest cavity, the lungs extend over a larger area, the spine is higher, and the animal's angle relative to the hunter constantly changes where the bullet should be placed.
Therefore, shot placement should not be learned as one specific point on the side of an animal. Instead, it's about understanding what lies beneath – and which path the bullet needs to take through the body.
Think of the animal in three dimensions
When you see a drawing of a roe deer from the side, it's tempting to learn a specific aiming point and use it every time.
But the animal is three-dimensional.
An aiming point that provides a perfect lung shot on a roe deer standing perfectly broadside can yield a completely different result if the animal is standing at a mere 20 or 30-degree angle.
The crucial factor, therefore, is not just where the bullet enters the animal. The crucial factor is the bullet's entire path through the body.
If the animal is angled away from you, the entry hole typically needs to be further back for the bullet to travel forward through the vital organs. Conversely, if the animal's front is angled towards you, the entry hole will need to be further forward.
The same logic applies to shots from a high seat or hunting tower. Here, the bullet travels diagonally downwards through the animal, and the aiming point on the animal's surface must therefore be assessed based on where the bullet needs to pass inside the body.
This is one of the most important things to understand about shot placement: You are not shooting at a spot on the hide. You are shooting at an area inside the animal.
The Classic Shoulder Shot
The most well-known shot placement on deer is the shoulder shot.
With a clean broadside shot, the bullet is placed in the chest region around or immediately behind the shoulder blade. Here, you'll find the lungs, heart, and major blood vessels, among other things.
The advantage of the shoulder shot is primarily the size of the vital area. Compared to, for example, neck or spine shots, the chest cavity offers a significantly larger margin of safety if the bullet lands a few centimeters from the intended point.
A correctly placed shot will destroy lung tissue and potentially the heart or major blood vessels. The animal quickly loses blood pressure and oxygen supply to the brain.
However, this doesn't necessarily mean the animal will drop on the spot. Even a mortally wounded animal can cover a short distance before losing consciousness.
This is not in itself a sign of a poor shot.
For the average rifle hunter, the large vital area is precisely one of the shoulder shot's greatest advantages.
Where on the shoulder should you aim?
The term "shoulder shot" is not always used consistently, and therefore two hunters might talk about a shoulder shot without meaning precisely the same placement.
A practical method for a roe deer standing perfectly broadside is to use the front leg as a reference. Follow the back of the front leg vertically up the body and locate the chest region around the middle of the body.
This places the aiming point in an area where a correct bullet trajectory will pass through vital parts of the chest cavity.
However, one should avoid perceiving the entire side of the ribcage as one large safe impact area. The lungs have a complex shape, and particularly at the rear, parts of the lung tissue become thinner. At the same time, the liver and stomach are closer than many simple drawings of deer suggest.
A shot too far back can therefore quickly develop from an effective lung shot to a liver or stomach hit.
Therefore, it is better to think "front part of the chest cavity" rather than just "somewhere in the middle of the side."
The Heart Shot – effective, but placed low
A direct heart shot can naturally be very effective.
The problem is that the heart is located relatively low in the chest cavity. When deliberately aiming for the heart, you therefore reduce the margin of safety below the aiming point.
If the bullet is a few centimeters too low, the result can be a glancing shot or a serious wounding instead of the desired heart shot.
This is a significant reason not to focus too narrowly on the heart itself.
A well-placed shot through the vital area of the chest cavity allows for minor deviations, whereas a very precise aiming point on the lower part of the heart places greater demands on the shooter, distance, shooting position, and the animal's movements.
A lethal heart shot does not necessarily mean the animal drops immediately either. The brain can continue to function for a short time, and an animal with a serious heart shot can therefore manage to run a distance.
The high shoulder shot and the CNS shot
Another option is to place the shot higher and further forward in the area around the shoulder blade, spine, and central nervous system.
A precise hit in or near the spinal cord can immediately sever the connection between the brain and the body. The result can therefore be the classic "thump and drop," where the animal collapses at the shot location.
This is an attractive characteristic, and there are hunters who prefer this placement.
But the high placement also has another side.
The area that must be hit to achieve the desired effect on the central nervous system is smaller than the overall vital area of the chest cavity. Particularly the vertical margin of error becomes smaller. A shot too high can hit the dorsal processes above the spinal cord itself. In such cases, the animal may drop at the shot and then get back up again.
A shot too far forward can end up in muscle tissue, while a correct hit through both shoulders can also cause greater damage to the meat.
There is therefore professional disagreement among hunters as to whether the CNS shot should be preferred over the traditional shoulder shot.
The advantage is the possibility of instantaneous loss of consciousness. The disadvantage is that you are aiming at a more specific anatomical area and therefore need to be very certain about the placement.
The neck shot has a very small margin of error
Similarly, a neck shot can be instantly fatal if the spinal cord or major blood vessels are hit correctly.
However, the neck also contains large areas where a projectile can pass through muscle tissue without hitting the structures that ensure a quick kill.
At the same time, the neck is narrow and often moves significantly more than the body itself.
This results in a very small margin of error.
Thus, a neck shot can be extremely effective with a perfect hit and very problematic with a shot just a few centimeters off.
For most hunting situations, the larger vital zone in the chest cavity therefore provides a much greater margin of safety. Generally, it is recommended to use the CNS shot.
The shot angle can be more important than the aiming point itself
One of the most frequent problems with shot placement arises when the animal is not standing perfectly broadside.
Imagine you have learned to place the crosshairs at a specific point behind the front leg. If the roe deer turns 30 degrees away from you, you cannot necessarily use precisely the same point and expect the same result.
The bullet will now travel diagonally through the body.
Therefore, you must visualize the placement of the vital organs and choose an entry point that guides the bullet through them.
The more acute the angle, the smaller the effective impact area often becomes.
An animal standing perfectly broadside therefore, as a rule, presents one of the simplest and safest shooting situations.
Very acute shot angles from the front or back place much greater demands on both bullet placement and understanding of anatomy. If the angle does not provide a safe bullet path through vital organs, the best decision is to wait for a better opportunity.
Shooting from a high seat also requires careful consideration
When hunting from a high-placed tower or shooting ladder, another dimension comes into play.
The bullet does not travel horizontally through the animal, but diagonally downwards.
At short distances and from a high position, the angle can be significant. An aiming point that appears correct on the animal's exterior can therefore result in a bullet trajectory that passes differently through the organs than with a regular horizontal broadside shot.
Therefore, consider both entry and exit.
The question should always be: If the bullet enters there, where will it exit?
If you can visualize the bullet's path through the chest cavity, it also becomes much easier to choose the right aiming point.
The longer the distance, the smaller your real margin of error becomes
At the shooting range, the rifle may group shots impressively tight.
Hunting conditions are different.
The shooting position is rarely as stable. The pulse may be higher. The animal may move. There may be wind, and the distance can be difficult to estimate.
At the same time, the actual spread increases with greater distance.
Therefore, the shooting distance should not be determined by how far the rifle can technically shoot. It should be determined by how far you can reliably place the bullet within the vital area under the specific circumstances.
A larger target is also not an invitation for longer shots. The safety margin should be used to handle the small errors that can inevitably occur during hunting.
The best shot opportunity may be the one you don't take
The animal should preferably be standing still, and you should have a stable shooting position and know the distance.
But equally important is the animal's position.
A calm roe deer standing perfectly broadside at a known distance provides a significantly simpler shooting situation than an animal that is moving, standing at a sharp angle, or only showing part of its body.
There's rarely any reason to rush the shot.
Wait a few seconds if there's a chance the animal will turn into a better position. And if the good opportunity doesn't come, the shot must be withheld.
This is a central part of responsible rifle hunting.
Which shot placement should one choose?
There are varying opinions on the optimal bullet placement for deer.
CNS and high shoulder shots, with a correct hit, can lead to instant drop and loss of consciousness. However, they aim at a more specific anatomical area, and the margin of error – especially upwards – can be limited.
A direct heart shot is effective, but the heart's low position means that a downward error can have serious consequences.
The neck shot has the smallest margin of the common placements and requires a very precise hit.
The traditional shoulder shot through the vital part of the chest cavity, on the other hand, provides a relatively large lethal impact area and thus greater tolerance for minor shooter errors.
For the vast majority of common hunting situations, a safe shot through the front part of the chest cavity is therefore a good starting point.
But regardless of the placement chosen, the most important rule remains the same:
Know the animal's anatomy, understand the shot angle, and only take the shot when you are certain that the bullet's path will pass through vital organs.
It's not the perfect point on a drawing that makes for a good shot.
It's the understanding of what lies behind that point.
